COVID-19: Road Haulage Sector welcomes Commission plan to boost European Economy

Nordic, French and German road haulage associations see the European Commission’s proposal on the EU budget as a first step to boost European economy to overcome the economic crisis in the European Union.

The Commission plan foresees for its European recovery instrument a budget for € 750 billion to “kick-start” the European economy, boost the green and digital transition as well as mitigate unemployment risks for the large number of SMEs we represent.

The road haulage associations NLA, FNTR and BGL welcome the link between economic recovery and investments to prepare for the future. The road haulage sector has proven during the COVID-19-crisis to be vital to society by maintaing supply chains and providing essential goods to the European citizens.

The road haulage sector is committed to carry on contributing to the greening of its services. It needs clear political signals for future technological choices but also public investment to boost the greening of our sector. The implementation of the “Recovery Plan” needs public support for instance when helping to set up infrastructure for alternative fuels as well as for road infrastructure; better roads meaning reduced emissions.

We therefore welcome the Commission’s focus to help the transport sector recover while boosting green infrastructure and sustainable vehicles. We now look forward to being included in the discussions on the roll out of these initiatives. This way the sector can be strengthened and contribute to maintaining the functioning of society in an even “greener” way.
